The Gift of Time


Seven years ago, when I was looking for a preschool for my daughter, I attended a Preschool Showcase at the local library. I was amazed by all the directors that spoke about their reading and math curriculums, enrichment programs, and computers for the 3 year olds. All I could think of was, “What happened to a sand table, some fingerpaint and a box of crayons?” Finally, one director began her presentation by reading the following poem...

ABA Meets Speech Therapy… It was Love at First SD

“I don’t believe in ABA”
“ABA makes them like robots”
“ABA doesn’t work. I’ve done it before, I know!”
“Why would I do ABA when I’m here to do speech therapy?”
Over the past seven years I have been on a professional journey.  It began with ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) and then speech therapy.  While on this journey a wonderful thing happened, a beautiful relationship, the marriage of “Speech” and “ABA.” All I have to say is “Congratulations!” to the speech therapists that DO use behavior therapy throughout their session with children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). 
 OK, so let’s get started…  Let me fill you in on how this rather “secret” relationship works and why.  My hope is that it will open up your eyes to a better way to provide speech therapy to children with ASD...

Real World Language

With the holidays upon us there will most likely be many opportunities for our children to go and see places and things that they do not experience every day. The novelty of these events may present good opportunities to practice recalling and retelling. The following procedure can be implemented as often as you would like.
